Washington DC Oct 23 ‘18

We finally made it to Washington. 1300 miles (2100km). Over two days with a stopover in Nashville. What a ride, and some of it quite spectacular. The part where we took the Natchez Trace highway was perfect (thank you Norman Sanders for that suggestion). I missed it at a loo stop, but the girls saw a big crocodile (or was it an alligator?) at this lakeside break.
When we got to our Airbnb in Washington, Gopi & Raag dropped in with goodies (= food!) and we made the usual round of plans that would absorb us for the next days and into the wedding at Annapolis.
The first day we saw the usual - The Lincoln Memorial, & a special favourite was the MartinnLuther King  memorial.

NOLA-Natchez Oct 22 ‘18

We I decided that part of the trip would involve a road trip, A drive up from New Orleans to Washington.
My biker friend Sandy, will travel versus immense distances on his assortment of bikes a recommended this route for us. The Natches Trace is a spectacular drive through the forest.
1300 miles (that’s 2100 km). The plan was to get there in 2 days. Our first stop was at Natchez, a brief layover in a motel, and then up to Washington. It was a great ride....

We decided to explore the Delgado Museum in the city park, a wander through the sculpture gardens and cap that off with a coffee at Morning call.

NewOrleans - Oct 16 ‘18

If NewOrleans is trying to wear me down, I’m definitely proving to be more resilient than expected.
We are packing it in.  We met Jana in the Quarter and went for a tour past the levee, over the river and through some of the post-Katarina ravaged areas. There are signs of some resurgence.  Lots of signs of gentrification everywhere else. The fringes of the Vieux Carré seem to be the same.
Dinner with Richie, then music at the Collonade and we then went to MapleLeaf to watch ReBirth. Wow, what a performance. Raw brassy music. We’ve been getting home st 2:30am every morning - Something’s gotta give

NewOrleans - Oct 15 ‘18

New Orleans. ‘Crescent City’, ‘The Big Easy’. Whatever. This qualifies as my other home. It’s been 40 years since I was here, and it’s a kind of homecoming. Between school semesters at The San Francisco Art Institute, I grew up with Jules Cahn’s family. His sons Richard & Jimmy were like brothers. It was very emotional all those reconnections again.
We were picked up at the airport by Jana Napoli, and went for a great seafood dinner at Pesche. It was pouring rain, but that didn’t faze us. We were dropped off to Richard & Vivian’s home, just enough time to unpack and then off to The Quarter for music. Richard took us to D.B.A where Louis Michot - a great Cajun fiddler was performing (he had just won a Grammy with his band The Lost Bayou Ramblers). Unfuckingbelievable music...

Ciudad De México Oct 14 ‘18

We’re back in México City. We absolutely love it, and love being back.
Knowing Carlos and his real insider info, along with the incredible places he’s shown us has given us a special perspective.
Everyone kept telling us that México is dangerous and to be careful, but we’ve never felt safer and the locals are really ‘muy simpatico’.  And the food...
I’ve enjoyed compiling the sets of images, more like my visual storyboard which might segue into some short video clip or an animated sequence. Judging from the messages flowing back from work, things might be getting a bit busy when we get back...
Here then are some images from the 14th before we head to New Orleans - my kind of second home... it WILL be a homecoming of sorts.

Guanajuato October 13 ‘18

0k, I can’t keep up. This blog posting is exhausting. I am 12 days behind, not s big deal, but I’m selfish about my time. I would rather be out doing stuff than spend time over compiling my thoughts...
This is our last day here, and México we will miss you terribly.
Ciudad de México will be our transition to New Orleans (my favourite US city!).
México has been overwhelming for all of us, and possibly our favourite, special place. We WILL be back..

Guanajuato - Oct 12

The Cervantino Festival is swirling all around us in Guanajuato. We are on a full-on tourist mode. We went to the top of a mountain by a funicular train, to the peak where the Pipilia monument (with a statue of a freedom fighter towers above us). I should post a story about that some other time. We have been exploring this town and invariably landing back at the ‘zocalo’ and of course the array of Méxican handicrafts is pretty special. Somewhat like, but very different to the craft in India.

Guanajuato, October 11th

So we’ve been here 3 days, and feel almost local! We’re rested, know our way around and you could say we’re cruising. I caught up with an old classmate of mine from the San Francisco Art Institute, Maureen Ruddy Burkhart  is a photographer with an extensive reach. She lives here with her partner Grant. They took us for a spectacular meal at Restaurant Mercedes. Thank you! That’s the second SFAI person I met on this trip. The first was Carlos Mora, whom we met in México City. (Those I ages are not yet here - they were shot on my X-100F, which is a bit more of an effort to transfer out and post I will post those images later...  Below are the images of the 11th

Day 4 - In Guanajuato- October 10th

It’s my mum’s birthday,  Happy 95th Birthday Mum! It was great speaking to you, and thanks Romir for connecting the call which is difficult to do when you’re travelling.

We’re in Guanajuato. Incredible? Really. I will tone down the superlatives, but this place is a real beauty. Ah, but the hills... I can get worn down and the climbs are unreal, even superseding San Francisco! (Just a reminder, all of the US including California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and more, were once part of México).

So Guanajuato is a gem. We were slap-dab in the middle of the Cervantino festival, which meant the place was absolutely crazy crowded and festive and, well, insane....
